THE FIRST DAFFODIL

She turned to the sunlight
And shook her yellow head,
And whispered to her neighbour:
‘Winter is dead.’

A. A. Milne, When We Were Very Young

The Christmas before last we were treated to an unseasonable ‘host’ of daffodils in our Sussex garden. This year the signs of incipient spring have been scarcer but yesterday our first daffodil of the year bloomed. I wrote the following verse to celebrate this small golden epiphany:

I just discovered your marvelous acting abilities through Midsommer Murders. Before then, I hadn’t heard of you – but you are impressive enough to research. I just wanted to tell you that you have a new admirer. It is SO enjoyable to know that there are still Renaissance Men out there, and I love your multifaceted blog. Thank you.
