Oh my goodness, how glorious. I have just listened to your conversation with Paul and found it both hilarious and touching. For me, for many years, Edward, you have been the epitome of all that is fine about the world of theatre, and I saw most of the performances to which you refer, including the inspired My Perfect Mind. Listening to you has evoked so many wonderful memories – for which, much thanks.

Lovely to hear this conversation: thank you. I’m reading Hermione Lee’s biography of Stoppard and the mention of Stoppard directing you in Hound in 1985 which brought happy memories. I’m very proud to have been your understudy for King Lear in My Perfect Mind one night in Birmingham! Please remain, if you get the choice, amongst the quality actors who retain a grip on their ego, like Paul Scofield, and decline the knighthood!

dear Simon I don’t think I’ll get the chance, but I think the great Scofield became a Companion of Honour…… and just in case I get above myself there are always the three negative lines in Lee’s book about R&G to take me down several pegs, but only momentarily since I know the curiously scant reference to me is demonstrably inaccurate. having been given the chance to get that off my chest I will thank you again and say no more Edwar P
