VIRGINIA WOOLF, 1882-1941

Google has today created a new ‘doodle’ to celebrate Virginia Woolf’s 136th birthday. And so, it seems timely to reprise our little film which features my sonnets about Virginia and her last home, Monk’s House, here in East Sussex.

Towards the end of the film, you will have heard Emily reading, so beautifully, an excerpt from Virginia’s essay, ‘Evening over Sussex’. It happens to be her birthday too. Here is a detail of my drawing ‘Waiting in the Wings’, which has as its centrepiece a portrait of Emily as Irina in Three Sisters. (She can also be spotted in the background in the role of Kate Nickleby.)

    Delightful film. Love visiting Monk’s House – try to go every summer. As to the portrait, I remember vividly seeing `Three Sisters’ in the intimacy of the Donmar – one of my best evenings in the theatre.
